St. Philomena Colleges, Puttur Celebrate 80th Independence Day

The 80th Independence Day was celebrated with great splendor under the joint auspices of St. Philomena Autonomous College and St. Philomena PU College.

The Principal of St. Philomena PU College, Rev. Fr. Ashok Rayan Crasta hoisted the flag and speaking on the occasion said, though the country has developed in various fields after independence, the level of education has increased. As literacy has increased, opportunities for students to get good education have expanded.

"Let us start the change from ourselves. Let us know what to do for the society and how to build a great nation and work accordingly," he called upon. Vice Principal Dr. Vijay Kumar M. gave the Independence Day message. Machines cannot think as fast as humans, but they have no discretion. For nation-building, a degree certificate alone is not enough; physical and mental strength is also needed.

Students should adopt sports, yoga, exercise and positive thinking in their daily life. They should not be afraid of failures, he said.

The Principal of St. Philomena Autonomous College, Rev. Fr. Dr. Antony Prakash Monteiro spoke and said that three words - Divine Grace, Purity and Prosperity should always be remembered. Understanding God's grace along with purity and prosperity, we should contribute to the development of the country, he urged.

Counselor of Fr. Patrao Hostel, Chandan S. Anchan administered the 'Nasha Mukt Bharat' campaign pledge.

In the program, 3/19 Karnataka Battalion NCC, 5 Karnataka Naval NCC Unit, National Service Scheme (NSS), Rovers and Rangers, Youth Red Cross, Performing Arts and Band troops participated. Digant V.S. led the parade.

NCC Captain Jaslin David Sikquera, Sub-Lieutenant Tejaswi, NSS Coordinator Dr. Edwin S. D'Souza, Academic Registrar Dr. Norbert Mascarenhas, Examination Registrar Dr. Vinayachandra, Fine Arts Association Coordinator Prashanth Rai and PRO were present among many others. Students of the Degree and PU college Lalithakala Sangha performed various cultural programs.

Head of Hindi Department Dr. Dimple Fernandes welcomed. Professor of Physics Pujashree V. Rai compered the program.
